SANS COUTURE
i used to make beaded jewelry as a little kid--just simple pieces made of seed beads, nothing special. i don't think that i did it as fashion--i don't remember ever wearing any of it. i must have done it for the craft, like making pot holders or braided keychains. it may have been a result of never having been a girl scout. i got my ears pierced in march of 2003. i was in nyc on spring break. it was my first year of grad school and i was visiting friends from michigan. i had had them pierced once before, for less than a year. i was 12 or 13 and had to take them out because i had ear surgery. i was compelled to re-pierce them because of all the long dangly earrings that were popular (particularly a pair worn by alexis bledel in a gilmore girls promo on the wb). shopping for earrings, i noticed that a lot of what was sold looked easy to construct from beads and wire. i started copying the stuff i saw and it sort of evolved from there. most of the stuff i do, reflects my personal style, which is quite broad and ecclectic, or the styles of my friends, who are a little less crazy. the name 'sans couture' comes from the label of a t-shirt that i have. in that case, it means "seamless." however, since sans means "without" and couture usually relates to high fashion, i thought that it was a funny phrase to appear on a piece of clothing. i like to think of style outside of fashion and trends. i am not into brands. for me, high fashion is art and inspiration. i like stuff that is individual or unique--pieces that take on different looks when they are on different people. i hope my stuff reflects that. sans couture jewelry is made in individual pieces or in short runs. no piece is guaranteed to be completely one-of-a-kind, as i may reproduce pieces or enhance them. however, all pieces are uniquely designed by me and will only be made in small quantities. most sans couture jewelry is made of beads and metal findings. the beads are most often either czech glass or semi-precious stone (although occasionally may be of another material). the metal used in sans couture jewelry includes base metal (brass, copper, etc.), sterling silver, and 14k gold fill. each sans couture piece will vary slightly due to variations in stone and the general nature of handmade goods. if you have any questions, you can contact me at hillary @ sanscouture.com for more info or photos. sans couture jewelry should be cared for as you would any other jewelry. store each piece seperately (sealing in individual bags will slow the process of oxidation of the metals). do not let jewelry come in contact with harmful chemicals (keep away from direct exposure to perfumes and lotions). with careful handling, the pieces will retain much of their original shine. however, sterling silver and gold-fill will tarnish and lose it's luster over time (taking on a more antiqued look).
